In this part of the session, the participant will reflect on Day One of this RESA training and discuss any issues or concerns that may have arisen. The participant will also share the generalizations that they developed for homework and provide feedback and revisions as appropriate.

The learning objectives associated with this part of the session are:
1. Follow the Unit Plan Development Process to create a quality conceptual unit.
5. Craft quality generalizations.
11. Apply the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards in the Social Studies classroom.

Aligned North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards

Standard I - Teachers demonstrate leadership.
Standard III - Teachers know the content that they teach.
Standard V - Teachers reflect on their practice.

Learning Targets

After this part of the session, participants will be able to do the following statements:
  • I can reflect on and recall information learned during the first day of the Fall 2012 Social Studies RESA.
  • I can provide feedback on generalizations crafted by my peers.
  • I can revise generalizations to make them more effective as an element of my conceptual unit.

I. Reflecting on Day One

After reviewing the 3-2-1 notecards from Day One, let’s take some time and address your questions, comments, and concerns. This is also an opportunity for you to discuss Day One with your facilitators and colleagues. If you have questions or issues that were not addressed at the end of yesterday's session, please bring them up now!

Let's consider now where we stand in the 12 step unit development process before turning our attention to the generalizations you crafted. Take a moment to review the process.

II. Back to Generalizations

Last night, you drafted three generalizations that can be used for your unit. Keeping in mind the guidelines that we went over yesterday and are provided for you again below, exchange generalizations with your colleagues and provide them feedback. What is a strength of the generalization? How can it be revised?

After discussing the generalizations with your colleagues, incorporate the feedback into your revisions (if revisions are necessary). Your facilitators will be circulating throughout the room to offer assistance and collaboration.

Let us now turn our attention to exploring the role of guiding questions.
